This post about Christmas cards ideas just came to me last night while I was thinking of what to do this year for our family card. When Zach was a baby we sent out a baby picture of him with a messy face and it said, “Have a messy Christmas!” Little did I know that that little simple card would be the beginning of a very fun tradition.
Ever since that one card we have tried to do something cute or funny with our cards. Some years have been better than others. I would say that last year was the best. I don’t think we will be able to top that but we will try. This year I am having a hard time coming up with something, specially since our oldest is now at college. He is not that far but it’s not as easy as it used to be.
I am going to go back to 2012 otherwise we might need two blog posts about this. By 2012 all the kids have been born and my love for Christmas cards has hit an old time high (I partly blame Pinterest). In 2012 mustaches we a big thing and I find them HILARIOUS! I knew I had to use them for my card. I present you the card for 2012…
2013 rolled around and I found myself wishing we had snow so I had to think of how to make it snow for my kids. Thanks to the magic of Photoshop almost anything is possible. That is how my snow globe idea came to life (I bought the snow globe overlay somewhere on the interwebs).
Next card was all about the chalk in 2014. I drew up a chalk Christmas scene and the boys posed like they were part of the drawing. Got to love how cooperative they are. They deserve a price. Wait, Christmas is their price!
In the year 2015 I paid homage to one of our favorite Christmas movies. “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was the theme. I love anything SNOOPY and so does my hubby!
Another thing that Rick and I love is Coke stuff. He grew up in Atlanta so Coke was always a part of his life. We have some Coke “collectibles” in the kitchen because we like it so much. That is were the idea for the 2016 card came. We saw a vintage Coke ad where the family is looking at a magazine and it said, “Share a coke and a smile.” So from there we did the 2016 version of it. I just love how it came out.
We are almost done, I promise. The year 2017 my inspiration was Minecraft. Every boy in this house played this game as some point (one still does). So we did Minecraft elves and they sang like Buddy the Elf from the movie “Elf.” This was mostly a Photoshop card. Still so fun!
Last but not least. 2018, this is the card that I most like. This card wasn’t even my idea. It was my husband’s idea. I just executed his idea. I love, love, love this card!!! He said we should do a card inspired by the movie, “The Hangover.” Well, how do you do that with kids? It was a Christmas Hungover. SOOOOOOO FUNNY! It is perfect! And now I am tasked with coming up with something for this year…
UPDATE from our Christmas Cards
After the 2018 Christmas card I feel like nothing can top it. I think it might be were I peaked. But I still have to try and do something. But in my heart that card will always be my favorite one. I still have to come up with some Christmas cards ideas. It is a tradition!
2019 marks the year that my oldest boy left for college. It felt like a huge year for the family. We managed to get a picture during Thanksgiving break and I pulled a card together at the last minute. Well, maybe not so last minute. I had been collecting boxes and wrapping them for a while. I just needed all my chickens in the nest. LOL
A few months after Christmas 2019 all of our worlds were rocked by a little thing called Covid. We were all inside and masks became a new normal. I knew that a lot of people would be making some kind of toilet paper reference in their cards so I stayed away from that. We all just snuggled up on the couch and took a family photo. It sums up our year just perfectly! 2020 was the year of the snuggle!
The latest of the Christmas cards ideas for 2021 is a composite card. I wanted to work on the card and the Zach would not be home any time soon so I created something from other photos that I had. In the back I did include a family photo so our friends can actually see what we look like this year. Hahaha
