The number one question I get when a senior books a session is, “what do I wear for my senior session?” Everyone wants to know how to style their session. And I am here for it!
I am not a photographer that wants everyone to look the same. On the contrary, I want everyone to look like themselves. I do not offer a closet where you can get your outfits. This type of setup reminds me of the old “Glamour Shots” from the 80’s and 90’s. NOT A FAN!
The first place you should shop for your session is your closet. This is where you will find what you love. Even if you end up buying new, use your closet to see what you are drawn to.
What to wear for my senior photos, mistake 1
Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Start by picking an outfit that shows who you are. 10, 15, or 20 years from now you don’t want to look back and think, “why was I wearing that?!” You want to look at it and think about the face of life you were in. If you are into all things girly, heals, dresses, and all things frilly then do that. If you are a bit of a tom boy then show up in some jeans and cool sneakers. No need to dress up like someone that you are not.
Wardrobe Mistake 2
The second thing that you should think of when you ask “what do I wear for my senior session” is VARIETY. Don’t bring two or three outfits that are basically the same or the same color. This is where you can do something trendy and something more “traditional”.
Also, in variety is included colors. Change the color scheme that you are using in each outfit. If one outfit is black and some boots your other outfit should have some different colors. When you change outfits it should feel different to you. If it’s different enough you will get a great VARIETY of shots. When the outfits look the same you end up with a lot of the same images. The beauty is in showing all the different sides that you have.
Mistake 3
This is something that some people don’t even think about… Accessories. Adding accessories to your outfit can take it from plain to Pinterest. Accessories bring spice into what you are wearing.
Bring your favorite earrings. Maybe wear that bracelet that your mom gave you for your birthday. Or maybe it’s your favorite necklace that you have worn for years. Those things can elevate your outfit to being perfect! And don’t forget to bring some sun glasses, a scarf, belt, or a hat. Playing with accessories is soooo fun!!!
Avoiding these simple things can make your senior session as unique as you! And I am looking forward to being able to capture the amazing person that you are RIGHT NOW!!!
