You have applied to school and the end of senior year is near. It is time to start thinking of those college dorm essentials. It’s good to get ahead of the game and start planning what you will need for move-in day. (Can you tell I’m a planner?)
Move-in Day
- Ikea Frakta storage bag. These guys hold so much and they fold flat for easy storage. You can buy them from Amazon so you don’t even need to live close to an Ikea. These guys are game changers!
- Power strips. And make sure they are surge protectors. You will need these so much. From your computer, lamps, phones, ect. You will have so many uses for these.
- Mattress topper for those dorm beds. Make them super comfy with a mattress topper. And while you are at it also get a mattress cover to protect your topper. You will spend a lot of time on your bed so make it comfy.
- Under the bed organizer. Dorms are small spaces and you need to make the most of it. If you use the space under your bed to organize some of your things you will maximize your closet space.
- A rolling cart. You can also keep this under the bed or next to your desk. You can keep things like desk essentials, paper, some snacks, etc. You can move it around to your different areas as you need it.
- Over the door organizer. Don’t forget to use the doors. That is precious real estate that can help you stay organized.
- Noise canceling headphones. Dorms can be loud and noise canceling headphones will be sanity savers. Tune out what you don’t want to listen to by just slipping these on.
- Tools to build all the stuff you are bringing. These one is kind of funny. Everyone thinks of all the things you need to buy but remember, some stuff has to get built. I have seen families struggling to build stuff because they brought no tools.
- Command hooks. Dorms don’t let you nail anything to the wall. This can make it a pain to hang anything. Command hooks will help you personalize the space. You can make it your own without damaging the walls.
Personalize your dorm
Your dorm room will be your home away from home. Make it your own. Show off who you are. You will spend a lot of time here so make it somewhere you want to hang out.
- Pick bedding you love. Your bed is yours to make what you want with it. Let your personality shine when selecting your bedding. (And remember, most of the times dorm beds are extra long.) Make sure to check with your college what size bed your dorm has.
- Removable wall paper. If you want to take your dorm room to the next level you can add some removable wall paper. It can be a huge upgrade, from dorm to glam!
- A cozy blanket. A nice soft and cozy blanket for those cold days and for the days that you are missing home. Wrapping yourself in a blanket can make everything okay.
- A rug. You will really like stepping on to a rug instead of the cold floor. And it will make the room look great!
- Desk essentials. From a lamp, to a trash can. Think of all the things that you need when you are at your desk.
- Bring photos of friends and family to hang on your wall. And remember what I said, bring those command strips and hooks. It will make your life so much easier.
Come back next month when I show you some of the most forgotten college dorm essentials. You won’t want to miss it. There will be some stuff that you will be so happy to have while you are away from home.
