The first thing to think of when you prepare for your family session is to book your session at the best time when the family will be happy. That might mean that if you have little kids it might be in the morning (early morning to get the best light). If you have teenagers you might be looking at having it in the afternoon. It’s all about the timing.

What to wear for your family session

Another thing that people find overwhelming is selecting what to wear. I am a firm believer that photos look better when we don’t try to look like clones. I like my clients to look like they are all going to the same party but not matching. Think coordinate not match. On the other hand I do not want you to look like you guys are going to different events. This is were I will help you. I will ask a few questions about what you are going to use your images. Where are they going to be displayed? What are your favorite colors? Do you want a casual look or something more formal? Then I will send you some ideas on how to select the pieces for everyone’s outfits and come photo day you will be more than ready!

The day of the session therefor you should set your clothes out, iron them, make sure that everyone’s clothes are ready to go. Work on hair and make up and relax. If you want to take it an extra step you can hire someone to do your hair and make up. Make sure that when you get to the session the family isn’t hungry or sleepy. That goes for the kids and for dads! LOL Hungry, sleepy people are usually not happy to be in front of my lens.

The last thing to think about when you prepare for your family session…

Remember the details. Make sure that your nails don’t have any paint chips on them, that you get haircuts with enough time to grow in a little, if you color your hair do it before your session!
