Planning family photos can be stressful. We all stress about family photos, specially outfits. What to wear is always a challenge when planning for the whole family. I think that this is one of the things that stress mom the most about their family photos. However, it doesn’t have to be.
Everyone wants their family to look amazing in the photos. However, a lot of times (or always) the kids will have an opinion on what they want to wear. So as a mom you have many people to please and make everyone look good. And not only look good but look you (as I say all they time) are going to the same party.
You can’t have one person going to an evening gala and another looking like they are going camping. First, I would say that you have to start by deciding how formal or casual you want your pictures to be. A factor that might help yo decide this is where you will be displaying your photographs.
Second, now you know where your photos will be displayed. You know how formal or casual you want to go. Now you get to put outfits together. A tip I ALWAYS give my clients is that it should not be a matching game. Think more coordinating. Everyone with jeans and white Polos is a no, no. Just don’t do it!
I like to think of the clothes as a coordinating game. Similar colors, a little pattern here and there. Nothing crazy! You want everyone to look like themselves. If they like their clothes and how they look they will be more comfortable in front of the camera.
The coolest place to find inspiration for outfits and help you in planning family photos is Pinterest. I have some boards to help you with that or you can do a quick search. You will find such great inspiration there. Type in “family photos blue and grey” and you will only see photos with those colors for inspiration.
Finally, once you have decided, researched, you are ready to SHOP. You can shop at stores or even your closet! You would be surprised that a lot of times you already have something that will work for your session. For example, you might use a shirt your husband already has in his closet. From that shirt you pull the colors for the rest of the outfits (which most likely you have some parts of those in everyone’s closet).
In conclusion, there IS some planning to get done for your session. But it a little planning and not a lot of money spent you can have great outfits for the whole family.
